Maui Day 3

At least on this day we did not have to get up too early. We headed to Lahaina for a submarine ride. We have yearly passes for the Atlantis on Oahu and it is good for Maui as well. So we figured we would try it out. We really enjoyed it, more so than the one here. After that we hung out and went back to the hotel so the kids could go swimming. All they wanted to do was swim in the pool. For the evening we planned a trip up to the Haleakala Crater. Which is over 10,000 feet above sea level. We were told to go in the morning for the sunrise or evening for sun set. We are not morning people so we chose sunset. It was about 50 degrees up there. It was really cold. We drove through clouds and then we were above the clouds. At the top it was so clear, with a blanket of clouds below us. We were so close to the clouds, that we could see them moving (it looks different than from ground level), we have video of it. Anyway here are some pictures!!!! This is a cool tree found at the center of La'haina. I thought it was so cool the way it grew.

We took a small boat out to the submarine!
This is the sub going under! Here is a shot of Molokai'i in the distance.
Lil Wil on the submarineThis was taken as we were headed for the clouds, it looked like smokeYeah, we made it above the clouds. At the bottom of the picture you can see the road that we were on.At the top, you can see the Big Island. It is the two humps coming out over the clouds. I thought it was cool to be able to see it from there. The boys freezing and at the top of the crater! This is my favorite shot of the Haleakala Crater!
Not sure what these people were doing at the top here, but they were canting and so on. We were calling them sun worshipers.

This plant, which is only found here, blooms once every 20-30 years. This one was not blooming. The bloom grows out of the middle and grows pretty tall.

The sun finally setting. It was such a beautiful site!

Saying goodbye to the sun for the day! I have to say it was interesting driving back down the mountain in the dark. I was shocked we made it back to the hotel without getting lost!
